Le Nord and Picardy is a region richly endowed with gently rolling green hills, rivers, lakes and deserted windmills. It boasts six imposing cathedrals and, in keeping with its 'Battlefield of Europe' label, emotional war memorials commemorating heroic feats on its battlegrounds. The locals are known throughout France for being 'Bons Vivants', particularly whilst celebrating their carnivals and festivals. There are 5 main regions:
Calais and Boulogne are the main French Channel ports, where thousands of people arrive either to stock up with 'essentials' on a day trip, or start their French holiday.
Le Touquet is an elegant all-year round resort created in the 19th century and has attracted the rich and trendy from London and Paris, hence its original name: Paris-Plage. Now officially rebaptized Le Touquet-Paris-Plage, the resort is still a major short break destination for the chic and famous.
Walk around Arras and see its 17th and 18th century Flemish style facades, then sample the local specialities 'Andouillette' or 'Couers en Chocolat' (chocolate hearts), or look out for the hand-painted blue porcelain of Arras, a souvenir to take back and present to friends.
